The communication and organization of music files between iPod devices and iTunes make it easy to browse files in the software, but it's a little more complicated on a computer running the Windows operating system. To prevent easy music transfers for multiple computers, Apple hides the files on the iPod. Accessing them can be done with third-party software, and it can also be done with Windows Explorer.
.Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or Firewire connection.
.Open iTunes and click on your iPod under the Devices menu.
.Select 'Enable Disk Use' at the bottom of the screen and click 'Apply.' Exit out of iTunes.
.Click the Windows 'Start' button and select 'Computer.'
.Right-click the iPod device and select 'Explore.' A new window appears with multiple folders.
.Click the 'Organize' option on the menu bar and select 'Folder and Search Options.' Select the 'View' tab in the pop-up window and click on the 'Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives.' Click 'Apply' and exit out of the pop-up window.
.Explore all of the folders and files. For example, if you are looking for music files, click on the 'ipod_control' folder and there will be various folders with all the music files. The music is organized using encoded file names, so you have to open individual songs to hear what they are.
